Castles, fortresses, and more besides

Heinfels Castle
It is an imposing symbol and a prominent local landmark: Heinfels fortress was first mentioned in documents in 1243, and bore the name of "Huonenfels" until the 16th century. According to legend, it was built by the Huns. A visit to this wonderful castle and its typical winery is sure to remain in the memory, and from here you can also enjoy a fantastic scenic view over the whole valley.

Bruck Castle
The castle home of the former Count of Gorizia has enjoyed a long and distinguished history. Nowadays, these ancient walls house the extensive art collections of the East Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz, and also serve as the venue for many exhibitions.

Roman city of Aguntum
The small town of Dölsach is about 4 km from Lienz and has been a popular destination for archaeologists since 1912, as excavations have been going on locally for a long time. This is where you can see the well-preserved remains of the Roman town of Aguntum. An 18-metre high observation tower offers excellent views of the site. Who knows what else might be discovered here ...
